How long is my initial nutrition counseling session?

Initial sessions are 60 minutes.  We request that you either download and complete the initial nutrition counseling paperwork at home or arrive 10 minutes prior to your appointment to fill out the forms in the office.

What can I expect during my first visit?

Initial nutrition counseling appointments include a review of your history, assessment of anthropometric measurements (height, weight, body mass index, basal metabolic rate, and body fat percentage; growth charts for children), appropriate goal setting, meal planning, nutrition education on related topics, and discussion of an appropriate follow-up plan.

Can my spouse and/or children join me during my session?

The client may bring whomever they wish to help provide support during their session.  However, we respectfully request that you make every effort to find alternative arrangements for childcare if the session is not specifically for your son or daughter.  This will allow our time together to be more productive.

Do you offer family nutrition counseling?

Yes.  However, the more diverse the topics that need to be addressed, the less we will be able to cover during the 60 minute initial session.  Therefore, we recommend adding more time for initial appointments when more than two people are in the group.

Are follow-up sessions mandatory?

No.  However, we believe the best outcomes are achieved through monitoring your progress and providing ongoing education.  Because each plan is personalized, we will discuss our recommendation towards the most appropriate follow-up schedule during your initial session.  Length and frequency of follow-up appointments vary from person to person based upon their goals and needs.

What does a “meal plan” consist of?

Meal plans include an outline of your goals, calorie needs, portion sizes, food choices, fluid intake, meal timing, nutritional supplementation (if needed), exercise patterns, and any other special concerns or topics.

Is nutrition counseling covered by my insurance?

We are listed as participating providers for several insurance companies.  Please note that our status as a provider with your insurance company does not guarantee coverage.  Furthermore, we require a medical diagnosis provided by your Primary Care Physician or other treating physician to bill your insurance.  We urge all clients to directly contact their respective insurance company(ies) to determine whether Medical Nutrition Therapy is covered directly under their benefit plan.  Visit our Insurance Providers page for more details.
